Section 42, row 37, seat 21 of Fenway Park.

This seat in right field was painted red to commemorate famed Red Sox Ted Williams' historic home run. It was 1946 and his homerun the longest homer in the history of the park. At the time, this gargantuan blast landed in actual bleacher seats and not as the seats we know housed at Fenway.

In any event it symbolizes just one little jigsaw piece of the Red Sox history.

Finally, summer has arrived in New England and the Red Sox are cruising into the second part of their season...yeah! Go SOX! Josh Beckett pitched a shut out yesterday. So good, so good...

The Big One

'Red Sox fans refuse to turn against Ortiz. They just can't. They owe him too much for 2004 and 2007. It's like turning on Santa Claus or happy hour.' So says ESPN’s Sports Guy. Really? I feel for him; he’s not a quitter and has been consistent since 2002 but he is getting older, misses Manny in the lineup, and for whatever other reasons there are, he's in a monumental slump. And it's costing the Red Sox money. True, he's not the only problem at the moment and it's early in the season. But how much longer will the Red Sox organization be patient with Big Pappi? He's been the face of the Red Sox for awhile now and one of the positive attributes of this organization is that not only are they successful businessmen, they also have a heart.

There’s talk of a possible trade – but I keep the hope burning that soon (and it definitely needs to be soon) his bat will make contact with the ball for a hit – any hit will do. I still believe…..

Jerry Remy - A Classic

Jerry Remy is the voice of Red Sox Baseball in Boston. Together with Don Orzillo, they entertain a TV viewer sometimes by cracking some banal jokes, sometimes a pun is fed off one another, always a lot of laughs. Jerry combines this with a player's knowledge of baseball that he has the ability to translate for even young novices along with seasonsed veterans. Hope his health improves and he is back in the booth soon.

PS: This just in from the NY Times: Manny Ramirez, the Dodgers All-Star outfielder, was suspended by Major League Baseball on Thursday for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. Ramirez’s suspension will begin tonight, M.L.B. said in a written statement, and will cost him about a third of his $25 million salary this year. He will be eligible to return July 3.

Ramirez said in a written statement released by the players’ association that he tested positive not for a steroid but for a medication that a doctor had recently prescribed him for a personal health issue.

“Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy,” Ramirez said.

Life is Good

Summer arrived in Boston simultaneously with the Yankees. The Red Sox and Yankees played Round One of the 09 baseball season.

You don't have to be a Red Sox fan to have enjoyed these three games. The first game was a see-saw for the lead; Saturday's game was a marathon of hits; and last night's game was the appropriate crescendo with dramatic plays - an intentional walk to YOUK to get to hitless JD Drew - who doubled as their payback; Big Pappi got warm -finally; and Ellsbury stole home - yes, he did! A sweep - get out the brooms!

Play Ball!

Tomorrow is Opening Day! We may not have spring days, colorful rainbows, winning Tarheels, or sandy warm beaches, or cherry blossoms - heck, we don't even have daffodils yet. BUT -- we will have the sounds of Sweet Caroline, the crack of the bats and the smell of Fenway franks tomorrow. Now THAT's a sure sign that spring has arrived in Boston. Go Red Sox!

Hawaii (or any place warm) Dreamin'

Guess I'm just eager to have Spring (a/k/a warm weather) arrive on the East Coast, but the reality is a snow storm is predicted once again. Girasoli, keep those warm, wonderful palm silhouettes and sunrise photos coming!

However, it's coming - spring, warmer weather and the Red Sox!

I'm posting a photo of Boston College's (where I work) baseball team. It's an annual event to kick-off their respective seasons for the Red Sox and BC to play a game in Florida. It's a treat for the players altho BC generally loses - and loses big time. No mercy by the Red Sox players.

"Varitek, the popular Red Sox captain who is often praised for his game-calling and intangibles but is coming off by far his worst offensive season, came to terms on a one-year contract with a mutual second-year option, Red Sox officials confirmed this afternoon.
Varitek, who turns 37 on April 11, will earn $5 million in 2009, with the club holding a $5 million option for 2010. If the Red Sox do not pick up that option, Varitek has the choice of remaining with the club on a $3 million deal. In '10, he can earn another $2 million in incentives based on playing time, beginning at 80 games started."
